Leave a Review
I strive to create excellent, informative, easy-to-read courses and guides. I hope that you feel the same. Please leave a review to help give me feedback on this course and also help other clayers understand what you enjoyed and found helpful about this course. Thank you!
Materials
Here are the materials that are listed in the Sanding and Buffing Course. These links (some of which are affiliate links) are shown to help you identify the correct product that I’m referring to. Please find the sources that make sense for where you live.
Further down the page is a tabbed chart with trusted polymer-centric suppliers around the world. You’ll find these small shops have excellent support, great selection, fresh clay, and competitive prices.
Abranet Sheets
Readily available from Amazon or through many retailers, it can be difficult to find small quantities of Abranet in the grit levels that polymer clayers need. I’ve arranged with Tennessee Pen Supply to have a “Polymer Clay Pack” of Abranet that is very reasonably priced. You can select that pack in the drop-down on the product page. Another source of Abranet is Poly Clay Play and also Linda’s Art Spot. Note that Abranet is a Finnish product, so European clayers will likely find good sources locally. Small packs can be found from the French shop PolyStudio and in the UK at The ToolPost.
Abranet Discs and Handle
Sets of Abranet discs can be ordered from BuffDaddy here. They also sell the 3” domed foam handle. I found shipping to be a bit slow, but the products were very nice. This vendor also has many other types of automotive sanding supplies that are worth exploring.
Poly Clay Play has the Abranet handle to go with the disks.
Sonic Scrubber
I found this on Amazon, apparently imported from Japan. Here is a listing on Amazon for the one I purchased. You may find this locally or through your own country’s Amazon for a better price. It appears that this Rubbermaid Reveal Scrubber is very, very similar.
PolyFast
This new product is made in Belguim and only available through limited retailers. You can order the Poly-Fast on their website, and they’ll ship worldwide at reasonable cost. In Australia, you will find the Poly-Fast at 2Wards Polymer Clay. Currently there is no US distributor.
Sculpting Tools
Rubber-tipped sculpting tools are very handy. Here is one type.
I also like to use these silicone-tipped sculpting tools. They’re very popular and this is one source on Amazon.
Guard-Tex Tape
Here is a listing of the Guard-Tex Tape on Amazon. But I loved it so much that I asked Trish over at Poly Clay Play to carry it so that you can get a roll at a very reasonable price. It’ll last you a long time, and it’s SO much nicer than the Vetrap.
Vetrap
This seems to usually be found in 4” wide rolls, which is too wide. But if you’re diligent you can find 2” wide rolls of it. Amazon does have it here, but Vetrap is so universally used that you might do better by going to a pet supply store or to a farm supply store.
3M Polishing Papers
Again, I found my set on Amazon, but you can also purchase these awesome sheets from Rio Grande jeweler’s supply.
MicroMesh
If you’re in the US, Tennesee Pen Supply has a good price on the MicroMesh Sheets. (They also have Abranet.) I strongly recommend the sheets because they are flexible and far better for shaping around curved items than regular sandpaper is. If you’re in the UK, try Amazon here.
Deli Sheets
I don’t know how I clayed without these thin plastic deli sheets for so long. They are a game changer. Buy them. Just trust me on this. It can be hard to find single boxes of them because delis need them in cases. Try a kitchen supply shop. Or you can buy single boxes from Poly ClayPlay. Clayaround in the UK has small packages of them as well.
3M Radial Brushes
This is the only attachment that I know of where you can sand polymer clay with your Dremel. Buying them can be confusing because they come singly or in weird pack grits that make no sense for clayers. Mags Bonham has created sets of these wheels, already assembled on mandrels, selected for optimal grits for polymer clay. If you have to create a burnished effect on textured pieces, these are for you!
Dremel Buffing Wheels
My favorite source for all things Dremel is a company called Widget Supply. They have every possible Dremel and rotary hand tool fitting and bit and mandrel that you can possibly imagine. Many of which are at tremendous prices. These are the 2” buffing wheels that I recommend (remember, they need to be unstitched, stacked, and dressed) and this is a mandrel that will work for them. (I did have to enlarge the hole in the muslin wheels just a touch.) NOTE: Widget Supply no longer carries the 2″ buffing wheels, but these on ebay are similar.
If you’d prefer to buy the muslin wheel all put together already, Mags Bonham has a set of two types of wheels in her Etsy shop. I found that they’re a bit stiff and I would remove a couple of rows of stitching. But they’re big, thick wheels that do work nicely. Here’s the listing for the little fluffy wheels like I got off ebay. Like I said, there are several vendors who are selling these. Find similar ones in the ebay for your country or here on Amazon.
Miscellaneous Tools
If you’re in the US, you’re going to love FDJtool. They have everything. Just everything. If you can’t find something elsewhere, go there.
Suppliers
Please source your materials wherever it makes sense for you. I’ve gathered a list of reliable, trusted suppliers around the world. Be aware that it can be difficult to find polymer clay sources locally in your town, regardless of where you live. Ordering online is usually the best way to get a good selection and fresh products. Most of these suppliers also carry a full range of polymer-specific supplies.
